Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga will launch a probe into allegations of job promotion racketeering by SA Democratic Teachers Union members.
This after reports that SADTU members were selling principal and deputy principal positions at schools for over R30 000
In a statement released on Friday, Motshekga said she regarded the allegations as very serious.
Motshekga said the department would not hesitate to insitute criminal charges against those found to be part of attempts to undermine the quality of teaching.
The department will announce the names of investigators and the probe's terms of reference next week.
Meanwhile, Motshekga also raised concerns about problems at Moshesh Senior Secondary School in the Eastern Cape.
According to advocacy group Equal Education, there have been persistent problems at the school due to teacher shortages and absenteeism despite a Bisho High court order to prescribe proper curriculum planning and provision of teachers.
Equal Education says the district and provincial departments have failed to uphold the order.
Motshekga says it is unacceptable that pupils at the school still face such problems, and an urgent solution needs to be found.
