Eastern Cape police have re-arrested one of the seven prisoners who escaped from the police holding cells in Elliot on Wednesday.
Police Spokesperson Captain Khaya Tonjeni says the trial awaiting prisoners were detained on charges of attempted murder and house robbery.
He says after the escape, police managed to arrest a 21-year-old who is now back behind bars.
Tonjeni says it is alleged that the seven escapees overpowered the police officers, robbed an official state firearm from the members and fled on foot. Shots were fired randomly as they fled from the cells.
The escapees are Lihle Rashula, Dumisanu Tom, Inga Nkompela, Sfundo Sothondoshe, Yophi Samkelo Rasmeni and Phakamani Phoswayo.
Captain Tonjeni says these men are considered armed and dangerous and should not be approached by members of the public.
