Prison deadline looming for Abathembu King

The Department of Justice says it has not yet received any application for a presidential pardon for Abathembu King, Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo.

The Congress of Traditional Leaders reportedly said that it would make a last ditch effort to keep King Dalinyebo out of jail.

He is due to present himself to the Wellington prison in Mthatha onWednesday to begin serving a 12-year jail sentence after his final appeal to the Constitutional Court failed earlier this month.

King Dalinyebo was found guilty in 2013 for crimes committed against his subjects in 1995 and 1996. These included arson, kidnapping and defeating the ends of justice.

However, his culpable homicide conviction was set aside.

Justice Ministry spokesperson, Mthunzi Mhaga.

"Under normal circumstances the application will be submitted to the Minister of Justice who will then look at all the facts and collect all relevant information and procure the documentation to be submitted to the President for his decision. At the moment we have no correspondence from the King and his attorneys as far as the application for pardon is concerned. We expect him to present himself to the correctional centre in Mthatha" he said.
