Principal who asked learner to get phone in pit-toilet to be charged with attempted murder

A school principal from Ugie in the Eastern Cape will be charged with attempted murder after he allegedly coerced a learner to get into a pit-toilet to retrieve his cellphone.

The 49-year-old principal from the Lututu Junior Secondary School was suspended after a video of the inhumane incident went viral on social media, which led to an alleged confession.

Police Spokesperson Captain Khaya Tonjeni says it is alleged that the man, made an 11-year-old boy undress before he tied a rope to his upper body to lower him into the toilet with the help of other learners.

He is expected to make his first appearance in the Nqanqarha (Maclear) Magistrate's Court on Tuesday where he will be charged with attempted murder.

The Eastern Cape Department of Education expressed its shock at the incident and offered psychological support to all involved.
