Pretoria man jailed for murder of NMMU student

A Pretoria father who's student daughter was murdered in 2011 has welcomed the sentence imposed on her killer in the Port Elizabeth High Court.

Pretoria teacher, Mutshutshu Muvhango, was sentenced to 15 years for the murder of 18-year-old Tshepiso Sithole, who was strangled with the cord from her laptop computer in her Gomery Street residence in Summerstand.

Judge Murray Louw also sentenced Muvhango to one year in jail for stealing her cellphone.

The sentences will run concurrently.

Sithole's father, Freddy spoke to Algoa FM News, after sentence was passed on Tuesday.

"To be honest, I am in peace because in life we have to learn that we reap what we sow, what he got today [Tuesday]. This guy was so defensive and he never showed remorse to me, more especially as a family, my wife can't take this that's why I'm alone here, I'm all by myself. It's so painful that I wont see my daughter again."

Meanwhile, Sithole also spoke of the support he received from Reeva Steenkamp's parents, Barry and June, who put him up for the trial at their place in Greenbushes.

"I'm feeling so sorry for them, more especially what happened yesterday [Monday] that people just say that he must not go to jail and rather be kept in the house. You know, if you take yourself and put yourself in the Steenkamp's shoes you would feel similiar pain. So I know what they are feeling, because we are feeling a similiar pain."

Meanwhile, leave to appeal against Muvhango's conviction has been refused.
