MUNICIPALITY’S JOC AND RELIEF CENTRES STILL OPERATIONAL AROUND CITY

Relief efforts to assist flood victims are continuing at centres, and the Joint Operation Centre at the South End fire station building is still carefully monitoring the situation. Cause for concern is that while the weather has improved, rain is expected to resume from 9pm tonight, with heavy dow
npours predicted between 6am – 10am on Monday morning.

The Municipality again appeals to motorists to exercise extreme caution, and be on the lookout for potholes.

Given the closure of the N2, the Municipality advises motorists who wish to travel from Grahamstown to Nelson Mandela Bay to take the Bathurst route from Grahamstown, travel across Port Alfred and then via Alexandria to the Bay.

Motorists are also requested to exercise extreme caution when driving along the section of the road in Targetkloof where the sides of the road have collapsed.

The following roads have been closed:
• Upper Seavie Road
• Third Avenue dip
• N2 at Blue Horizon Bay
• Blackthorne Avenue in Forest Hill
• R333 Kudu Kloof
• Culturama Road in Rocklands
• Kempston Road and Cresswell Road intersection
• Intersection of Old Uitenhage Road and Nooitgedacht Road
• Riverstone Bridge
• Boundary Lane in Mount Pleasant
• Izinyoka Road in Govan Mbeki area

Access to St Francis Bay is a problem since the main entrance bridge has been washed away; the road between Hankey and Humansdorp is closed; but the road off the N2 between Hankey and Patensie is open. The R102 from Humansdorp to Kareedouw has been closed due to rock falls.

The main challenge currently is a shortage of foodstuffs and blankets for flood victims. The Municipality makes an urgent appeal to residents to assist in this regard, especially with fresh soup (please use disposable containers such as ice cream containers), soup ingredients, bread, as well as nappies, blankets and baby’s clothes.

The Municipality wishes to thank residents for their cooperation and patience in these difficult circumstances.
