President Jacob Zuma will on Friday attend centenary celebrations at the Fort Hare University, in the Eastern Cape, the Presidency said.
“The celebration will acknowledge the role that the university has played in educating Africans. It will celebrate the values and traditions that made the university to be Africa’s most respected institution of higher learning,” said the Presidency in a terse statement.
Alumni from Fort Hare include former President Nelson Mandela, ANC president Oliver Tambo, Botswana’s first democratic president Seretse Khama, President Julius Nyerere of the United Republic of Tanzania, Pan-African Congress leader Robert Sobukwe, the first President of the Republic of Zambia’s President Kenneth Kaunda and the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, President Robert Mugabe.
Mugabe, 92, is expected to attend the celebrations, but opposition parties from his economically run down country have warned they will demonstrate against his attendance.
The event will also coincide with Africa Month to commemorate the founding of the Organisation of African Unity presently known as the Africa Union under the theme, “Building a Better Africa and Better World”.
