The Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Pravin Gordhan says Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is a priority for government and that they want the metro to get it's governance right and to do the basics properly.

Gordhan delivered the keynote address at the Emerging Views on the Eastern Cape Economy Conference for Emerging Scholars and Post Graduate students.

The one-day conference is being hosted at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University on Tuesday in conjuction with Rhodes, Fort Hare and Walter Sisulu Universities and initiated by the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism.

Speaking to the media, Minister Gordhan, said government has started a process to declare municipal positions invalid if it is found that incorrect appointments are made within municipalities.

"Some of these positions have been given a bit of space, in order for these people to get the qualifications. Despite all the rules we have, wrong appointments are being made, we have started a process where MEC's in provinces will be receiving letters to say act against those municipalities and declare the appoinments of those individuals invalid." says Gordhan.
