Eastern Cape Police officers from Cedarville, Maluti and Matatiele have arrested four dangerous suspects within minutes of them robbing a Post Office in Cedarville of an undisclosed amount of money.
Four innocent bystanders were seriously injured during the ensuing shoot-out with police in downtown Matatiele in which one of the suspects was killed and another wounded.
Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana says five men had burst into the Cedarville post office on Wednesday morning where they threatened a security guard, customers and employees at gunpoint.
After taking an undisclosed amount of cash, the robbers fled in a charcoal-grey Toyota Cressida but were pursued and arrested by police.
Brigadier Kinana says the 5th suspect fled on foot in the direction of the Matatiele Magistrate’s Court, shooting randomly towards police officers, but wounding four bystanders in the process.
There was an exchange of gunfire between the police and the suspect which left the suspect fatally wounded.
A total of four firearms, three pistols and one revolver were recovered.
