Nqaba Bhanga to give statement soon on fatal birthday crash

Police in Gqeberha says the Executive Mayor for Nelson Mandela Bay, Nqaba Bhanga is yet to give his statement following a late-night car accident on his birthday last month in which two people were killed.

Bhanga who has since been discharged from hospital is recovering from surgery at home and is still nursing a fractured wrist.

Police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg says culpable homicide cases involve in-depth investigation and is a lengthy process.

She says although they have not yet spoken to the Mayor, the investigation is ongoing.

Captain Janse van Rensburg says arrangements will be made in due course to obtain his statement.

She says on completion of the investigation and once all statements are taken, the docket will be sent to the Senior Public Prosecutor to decide on whether or not to prosecute.

On the evening of Bhanga's 44th birthday, he was driving his private vehicle when it collided with a grey Audi on the R75 on the corner of St Leonards Drive and Uitenhage Road at 11.30 pm.

Both occupants in the Audi died on the scene.

They were identified as the 39-year-old Sandile Sicolo and a 44-year-old woman, Nonzwakazi Maho.
