The Coega Development Corporation says it has commissioned an Environmental Impact Assessment study to assess the feasibility of establishing a cargo airport at the IDZ.
Coega's, Dr Ayanda Vilikazi, says the study will also look at the feasibility of establishing an aeronautical or aerospace industrial cluster in the IDZ.
Vilikazi says the project is beginning to take shape, with the feasibility work being been done by industry experts.
Meanwhile, the Coega Development Corporation has welcomed the R185-million allocation in the provincial budget for the Medium Term Expenditure Framework.
The announcement was made on Friday during the budget presentation by Eastern Cape Finance MEC, Sakhumzi Somyo.
Dr Vilikazi, says the funding will help them to deliver turn-key socio-economic projects that empower government, private sector and communities through industrial and infrastructure development.
He says major social and economic infrastructure projects impacting Coega in the medium- to long-term, include PetroSA’s oil refinery, Project Mthombo, and the manganese terminal with rail infrastructure to be upgraded by Transnet.
