Parliament's portfolio committee on Environmental Affairs says it wants more action to prevent shark attacks at Port St Johns Second Beach.
In a report on the department’s budget tabled in Parliament, the committee said it notes “with concern” the recent shark attacks that have resulted in the deaths of tourists and local residents.
Last year, the Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism presented lifesaving equipment worth about a million rand to the Port St Johns Municipality.
This followed the death of an 72-year old Austrian tourist who was bitten while swimming off Second Beach, the ninth recorded fatality in the area.
The incident, the eighth in five years in Port St Johns, has earned Second Beach the unflattering tag of being the world's most dangerous beach.
