Eastern Cape police opened an inquest docket, after a man went missing in the Mzimvubu River Mouth in Port St Johns on Sunday.
The National Sea Rescue Institute says its volunteer sea rescue duty crew were activated following reports of a canoe which capsized.
NSRI spokesperson, Craig Lambinon says it appears that an employee from a local guest lodge, a man believed to be in his mid thirties, had taken a guest of the hotel, a female from Durban, to the river mouth to go paddling.
He says the canoe capsized and according to eye-witnesses, the man disappeared under water.
Lambinon says it is feared that the man has drowned, and police dive and dog units will continue the search on Monday.
