Port Alfred police arrest suspects for attack on fishermen


Two men were arrested today for the robbery and attack on three fisherman, including former Springbok Gerrie Sonnekus, in Port Alfred.

Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Luvuyo Mjekula says after following leads, Port Alfred detectives in collaboration with crime intelligence officers, arrested two men, aged 34 in Nemato Township on Tuesday.

Mjekula says police are looking to make more arrests, as two more suspects are still at large..

On Saturday evening, four men entered the holiday home in Anglers Way through a sliding door, and allegedly tied up 61-year old Sonnekus, 63-year old Bernadus Zaaiman, and 60-year old Andre Cleghorn, 60.

The suspects attacked them before fleeing with cellphones, alcohol, and an undisclosed amount of cash.

Sonnekus and Zaaiman were taken to hospital, but have been discharged.

Police Minister, Nathi Nhleko visited the Eastern Cape SA Police Service management and stakeholders in King Williams Town on Tuesday.

He told Algoa FM News that the purpose of his visit was to bring himself up to speed with the challenges the province faced.
