The Public Order Police (POPS) were deployed to the University Fort Hare Campus in Alice for a second day after students embarked on a protest on Wednesday.
Spokesperson Captain Khaya Tonjeni says the protest started when students converged on the R63 where they pelted cars with stones.
A warning had to be issued to motorists and POPS were deployed.
Tonjeni says later a group of students set fire to the kitchen where food was stored, but security noticed it in time and the fire brigades were called in to stop the fire.
He says another group of students then looted the kitchen and stole chickens.
Police disrupted the looting and arrested three male students between the ages of 20 and 22.
They are expected to appear in court soon.
It is not yet clear what the protest action is about.
