Popcru concerned by latest stabbing incident at St Albans

The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union says its perturbed by the stabbing of prison warders at St. Albans prison in Port Elizabeth.

Popcru was reacting to an incident at the jail on Tuesday morning where three warders were attacked by inmates during breakfast.

The Department of Correctional Service says the warders were treated in hospital for minor cuts, adding that the situation was brought under control by a specially trained security team.

However, Popcru spokesperson, Theto Mahlakwana, says the Department of Correctional Services needs to get to the bottom of this problem as soon as possible before officers are killed by inmates.

"It angers us that the Department of Correctional services have continued to fail to take any action on the situation. There has been enough time to get to the bottom of the problem and to find remedies to the situation. We are feeling that it will take the loss of a life for them to be able to wake up to the crisis that is in St Albans" Mahlakwana said.
