Political Intervention Needed to Move IPTS Forward.

The political leadership in Nelson Mandela Bay needs to intervene “to drive negotiations with the taxi industry” and resolve the impasses, according to a report to the Infrastructure, Engineering and Energy Committee on the Integrated Public Transport System (IPTS).

The report states that at present negotiations with the taxi industry have been “very difficult, mainly due to a lack of cooperation or un-sustainable demands resulting in deadlocks, which in turn impact on the progress of the programme overall”.

The report says there is also a need for the political leadership to intervene with regard to the completion of the operator verification process and “convince operators to allow the process to proceed or to accept an amount of R2 000 a month as compensation for those affected by the operations of the starter services”.

With regard to business development for the IPTS, the report says a framework is currently being de-veloped to outline the business development and requirements, including the identification of affected operators.
