Police on the Garden Route are searching for two men who abandoned a bakkie near Groenvlei containing more than a ton of perlemoen.
Police spokesperson Captain Malcolm Pojie says members of the Langeberg K-9 unit pursued a Nissan bakkie on the N-2 on Sunday between Groenvlei and Sedgefield.
He says the vehicle pulled over near Groenvlei and both the driver and passenger jumped out and fled into the dense bush next to the main road.
Pojie says attempts to arrest them were unsuccessful.
The members searched the vehicle and found 1035.9kg of abalone with an estimated value of R828 720.00 concealed in bags in the back of the bakkies. The find as well as the bakkies was confiscated and handed in as evidence. The find will be handed to the relevant authority for disposal their off.
