A policeman who assisted in the escape of an inmate has been sentenced to a year in prison in the Mqanduli Magistrate's court in the Transkei.
Police spokesperson, Major Zamuku-lungisa Josana says 30-year-old constable Anathi Mazwi was sentenced on Friday.
He had assisted in the escape of the prisoner in June 2010.
Meanwhile: A Knysna policeman is due in court tomorrow in connection with a shooting incident at the weekend in which a man was wounded.
Police captain Bernadine Steyn says a man from Khayalethu was reversing his car out of his property when he was driven into by another motorist.
Steyn says the driver of the second vehicle was an off-duty policeman and that he fired a shot - hitting the home owner before fleeing the scene.
He was arrested a short while later.
Steyn says the firearm used in the incident had been stolen from the Knysna police station.
The man who was wounded in the shooting is in a satisfactory condition in hospital in George.
