Police will not tolerate attacks on their members


Port Elizabeth police say attacks on police members will not be tolerated. The Deputy National Commissioner responsible for National Management Interventions, Lieutenant General Gary Kruser, says the two separate incidents in the Metro last week with concern.

On Friday afternoon SAPS members were pelted with stones by angry community members when they arrested a suspect for possession of drugs in Voissen Road, Helenvale. A woman police sergeant was struck in the face with a brick and several police and private vehicles were damaged.

The SAPS is investigating a case of public violence.On Sunday evening, police came under fire while chasing two suspects armed with firearms in Fichard Street, also in Helenvale.

No one was injured but a bullet penetrated the police vehicle. A case of attempted murder is under investigation.Lieutenant General Kruser says the SAPS has intensified their search for the perpetrators in both cases.
