Cradock Cluster Commander, Brigadier Madoda Zamkana, has welcomed the lengthy jail sentences imposed on three men convicted of the murder of an elderly resident.

On Monday, Malibongwe Dywili, was sentenced in the Grahamstown High Court to two life terms for the rape and murder of 51-year-old Hettie Philps in her home in Cradock last January.

His two co-accused, Asekho Malambile and Sinethemba Mzimkhkulu, were given effective prison terms of 20 and 25 years respectively.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Brigadier Zamkana, also praised Warrant Officer Theo van Zyl, for his work on the case.

He says the arrest and subsequent conviction of Philps' killers is a true reflection of the high level of commitment shown by police members in Cradock in ensuring criminals are brought to book.
