The man who died when his bakkie plunged off the notorious Voëlklip cliff at Herolds Bay outside George, has been identified.

Police spokesperson, Captain Malcolm Pojie, said he was 33-year-old Conrad Maree, who was killed in the latest incident at the so-called "cliff of death" on Tuesday morning.

His employer is said to have helped locate the vehicle through its tracking device when he did not show up for work.

Pojie said the employer, in the water irrigation business, contacted emergency services when he realised what had happened.

The Western Cape Government Emergency Medical Services (EMS) reported that the vehicle left the road and went off the cliff at around 08h40.

Their spokesperson Deanna February said they responded to a call for assistance and found the body of the driver at the bottom of the cliff.

February said four rescue vehicles were dispatched to the scene and the body was recovered by the WCGH’s Air Mercy Services (AMS) and EMS Rescue officials.

The Voëlklip cliff has claimed many lives over the years including that of George mother Heidi Scheepers and her two young children, Cozette and Hugo.
