Detectives probing the death of a 65-year-old woman following a fire in her flat in Park Drive in Gqeberha say they are now investigating a case of murder.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said the woman’s partially burnt body was found in her flat at Fernkloof on Tuesday morning.
“The investigation initially started as an inquest, however evidence collected at the scene of the fire, suggests that there could be foul play,” she said.
Meanwhile, Atlas Security said in a short statement that their Armed Response Officers found the vehicle of the victim in Victoria Drive where it had been abandoned.
"The SAPS was contacted and the investigating officer and the K9 Unit took over the scene to continue the investigation."
Naidu said the deceased woman cannot be identified until her next of kin can be traced. She said "according to sources" the woman has a son in Gqeberha and police need to urgently locate him.
Anyone who can assist in the investigation is asked to contact Detective Constable Ridwaan Baatjies at Humewood SAPS, Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or the nearest police station.
