Residents in West Bank in East London have been left traumatised following a violent cash-in-transit robbery.
The incident took place at a security company on Monday night.
A local resident, Tyron Ristow, says he felt two big vibrations and what sounded like 100 gunshots ringing in the air during the daring robbery.
It has since been confirmed by the Hawks that a police officer who responded to the robbery was fatally wounded in a high-speed chase across the city.
Spokesperson Captain Yolisa Mgolodela says they cannot confirm yet how many suspects were involved as they were travelling in four bakkies, loaded to the brim.
Ristow, who also viewed the robbery on CCTV, handed over the footage to police to assist in the investigation.
The identity of the slain officer is not yet known.
