A 46-year-old policeman who is the station commander of Macleantown in the Eastern Cape has made his first court appearance on a charge of murder
Captain Ayanda George Duma is accused of being in charge of a mob justice incident that left a 33-year-old man dead on Saturday.
Spokesperson for the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) Robbie Raburabu says Duma accused the man of breaking into his house and stealing his phone and laptop.
He says it is alleged that Duma was assisted by local members of the community police forum to round up some suspects in the Lingelitsha township in Berlin.
Raburabu says the group was assaulted and when the 33-year-old victim died his body was dumped on a public road.
Duma was arrested by IPID on the same day of the incident.
He appeared briefly in the King Williams Town Magistrates Court in eQonce on Tuesday where the matter was remanded to the 5th of May for a formal bail application.
