The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is investigating the death of a 13-year-old girl who was hit by a police vehicle that failed to stop at the accident scene.
IPID's Grace Langa says the matter was brought to their attention on Thursday night as a result of social media posts by members of the public who provided details and video footage of the incident.
She says it seems like the teenager was trying to protect her seven-year-old brother when she was hit by the police vehicle driven by a female officer.
The incident took place in KwaThema on the East Rand in Gauteng.
"It is alleged that the police officer did not stop. She left the dead body on the scene and the seven-year-old little brother injured. We managed to get the information and IPID is investigating," she said.
Meanwhile, Langa says IPID will also charge the duty officer at the police station.
She says the female officer eventually reported the incident to the Kagiso Police station in Krugersdorp where she is stationed, however, the duty officer failed to report it to IPID.
"We will be also charging the duty officer who was supposed to have reported the matter to us as per the IPID Act. We will hold him criminally accountable for failing to report. This is a very heart-breaking story," Langa added.
She also vowed that IPID would "ensure justice for the family, the little boy and the 13-year-old girl."
