Police Minister, Nathi Mthetwa, will be in the Eastern Cape today to meet police management and to assess the work of the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit.
Last year Mthetwa announced the reintroduction of the specialised units after they were disbanded.
Ministry spokesperson, Zweli Mnisi, says today's visit is being undertaken to help the Minister understand the challenges that this crucial unit is facing on a daily basis as they execute their duties.
The Minister will begin to monitor the family violence unit within the SAPS to look at service delivery within these units in terms of how they deal with issues of rape, sexual offences against women and children and the elderly.
The minister also wants to look at the challenges faced by these units and whether it's an issue of resources or training so that the department can begin to address them.
