SAPS: Kei Mouth
Police at Kei Mouth have arrested eight suspects for possession of a sizeable quantity of abalone.
Captain Siphokazi Mawisa says Members from the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries received information on Friday about people who were diving and waiting for a vehicle to transport abalone.
Members of DAFF alerted the Police who swiftly responded and saw the vehicle at the junction of the R349 between Kei Mouth and Morgan's Bay.
The driver sped off and Police gave chase.
Captain Mawisa says the occupants abandoned their vehicle and fled but were later arrested.
Diving equipment was found in the car.
Police also recovered the other vehicle, seized 477 units of abalone, and arrested another four suspects.
Both vehicles were confiscated.
The eight men, between the ages of 25 and 55, will appear in the East London Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of possession and transporting of abalone under the Marine Living Resource Act.
