Alicedale police are on high alert after a group of 200 angry community members earlier blockaded the town's two entrances with stones and burning tyres and tree branches.
Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Luvuyo Mjekula, says with reinforcements from the neighbouring Paterson police station, SAPS members at Alicedale are monitoring the situation.
Public order police in Port Elizabeth have also been notified.
Mjekula says that apart from blocking the town's two entry points from Grahamstown and Port Elizabeth, no violence has been reported.
The residents are, however, marching up and down the main road and as a precautionary measure, police are advising people to avoid Alicedale at the moment.
Two weeks ago, there were violent scenes in Alicedale when members of the community first burned tyres and tree branches and then two municipal buildings. Municipal officials' property, including a vehicle, were damaged. Police arrested 37 people for public violence at the time and all have appeared in court.
According to information received by SAPS on Tuesday, the latest action is a resumption of an earlier protest against the Makana Municipality over lack of development in the small town, about 30km from Grahamstown.
The residents are reportedly angry that the Makana Municipality has not sent the residents' committee confirmation of the start date of the housing and road repair projects as promised.
