Police call for calm in PE's nothern areas

The ANC and Cosatu have condemned a recent spate of violence against foreigners in Port Elizabeth, Diepsloot and Orange Farm.

National spokesperson, Jackson Mthembu, says regardless of what the cause of these violent protests may be, the ANC condemned any attacks on members of society, irrespective of nationality.

He said police needed to be stern and act decisively against those who were involved in acts of vandalism, intimidation and any other public disorder.

Cosatu said it was opposed to any hostility towards people of a different race or nationality.

A Somali national died after being stabbed in Booysens Park, Port Elizabeth.

However, police said the attack was not linked to the ongoing rioting.

Meanwhile Police in Port Elizabeth have called for calm in the city's northern areas, following three days of rioting and looting of foreign owned spaza shops.

Police cluster commander, major-general, Dawie Rabie, says 21 people have been arrested and he's warned that police will not hesitate to arrest law-breakers.

He's also appealed to community leaders and civic structures to assist in resolving the grievances of the protestors.

Protests started on Monday, when residents marched to the Bethelsdorp police station to demand increased policing in gang-infested Booysens Park.

Matters turned ugly when people began looting and torching foreign-owned spaza shops.

Since Thursday night, calm returned to the area, police captain, Stanley Jarvis said no incidents were reported thus far.

He said police were monitoring the situation.
