A 24-year-old student at Fort Hare University's Alice campus has been arrested on a charge of child abandonment.
Police said an elderly couple found the four-day old baby girl wrapped in towels and left in a bushy area at Centane this week.
Spokesperson, captain Jackson Manatha, says a cellphone number belonging to the child's biological father, who is also a university student, was left on a piece of paper attached to the child.
Manatha says the mother was traced and admitted abandoning her baby after giving birth.
She will appear in court soon while the child has been placed in the care of social workers.
