Plettenberg Bay aims to be one of South Africa's top tourist destinations in the fight against plastic pollution.
Several organizations have joined in the initiative, challenging every restaurant in town to eliminate plastic straws, individually wrapped after-dinner sweets, and polystyrene containers.
One of the organisers, Nicola Ash says according to statistics between one and 8 million tons of plastic waste end up in the ocean every year.
She says they would like to challenge every restaurant, café and takeaway establishment to strive to achieve a set of three objectives by World Oceans Day on the 8th of June.
Ash says they want to put Plett on the map for being the first town in South Africa to completely eliminate plastic.
She says as a business they have gone through this process and it is time consuming, so they realised they could cut all of that out and make it easier for everyone else so that they will be more willing to participate.
They also printed a booklet to share information on alternative products and how to educate your customers and staff.
