Plett calm after night of protests

The situation in Plettenberg Bay was calm on Thursday morning after some township residents burnt tyres and stoned cars Wednesday night.

Police spokesperson, captain Bernadine Steyn, says one policeman was injured when he was hit by a stone.

She says police used teargas to disperse the crowds and calm was restored at around midnight.

Steyn says the trouble started early Wednesday night when a crowd burnt tyres on the N-2 near Qolweni.

"Stones were thrown at vehicles during which a SAPS vehicle was damaged. Smaller groups threw stones at SAPS members, burned tyres at Qolweni industrial area. A lamp pole was set alight with burning tyres, businesses were damaged and bushes in Qolweni residential area were set alight," she said.

"In Bossiegif stones were thrown at SAPS members, tyres burnt and four houses were set alight," she added.

Meanwhile, At least 80 people are to appear in court for civil unrest and looting shops and businesses in Ratanda, near Heidelberg, following this week's service delivery protests.

The ransacking and stealing from foreign traders was sparked by protests which started on Monday.

Two houses, owned by ward councillors, and a municipal office were set alight.

Police were still in the area Thursday morning.
