Knysna Municipality's chairperson of Planning Development and Infrastructure, Councillor Louise Hart, has once again stressed the need to save water.
She says water demand in the Greater Knysna is still extremely high.
The Knysna-Plett Herald reports that demand of 11.3 mega litres per day is higher than most of Knysna's water supply is pumped from the Knysna and Gouna Rivers. "Currently we are able to pump 9.7 Ml per day from the rivers and the demand is 11.3Ml per day.
This leaves us with a shortfall of 1.6Ml per day, which is due to the high demand and limited pumping capacity. The storage dam is 46 % full which makes the supply system very vulnerable."
She added that the load-shedding has a negative impact on the water situation as the power outages affect pumping from the rivers which in turn affects the rate at which the dam is filled.
"We plead with residents and businesses to continuously conserve water."
