Eastern Cape Premier, Lubabalo Mabuyane, said there had been “a phenomenal reduction” in the burden of the Covid19 disease in the province.
Speaking during his weekly briefing on Tuesday, the Premier said there had also been a reduction in morbidity and mortality associated with the disease.
Mabuyane said 58% of the Covid19 cases in the province occurred in July, 27.6% in June and 9.4% in August, despite 310 people succumbing to the disease during the month.
“This shows that in the month of August our people have resisted the virus both in terms of infections and fatalities, as 86% of all reported cases and 78.6% of the deaths occurred during the June/July period,” he said.
With the move to Spring, Mabuyane said Bhisho was encouraged by the fact that 95% of the people who had tested positive for the coronavirus have recovered.
He added that nearly 50% of the 1 399 active cases remaining in the province were concentrated in Buffalo City and Nelson Mandela Bay Metros.
Mabuyane said the province enters the month of September on “a better footing than we anticipated", saying that "epidemiological data signals that we are winning the fight against the virus”, despite what was projected by various experts.
