A professional pharmacist and pharmacy assistant have been arrested for being in possession of state medicines, live ammunition, dagga and a dagga measuring scale.
The 29-year-old pharmacy assistant is working at a government clinic in Mdantsane while the professional pharmacist, a 28-year-old man is working for a private pharmaceutical company based in East London.
A spokesperson for the Department of Health Sizwe Kupelo says they were both arrested in their house in Amalinda on Tuesday.
He says the medicines in their possession were mainly for hypertension, sexually transmitted diseases, allergies and contraceptives while some medicines were schedule 5.
It is alleged that the two are running in an illegal clinic.
Health MEC Sindiswa Gomba and three senior departmental officials identified the stolen medicine at the Cambridge police station.
Kupelo says there is no place in the department for anyone who steals from the state and the official involved will be decisively dealt with.
The two suspects are expected to appear in the East London Magistrates Court soon.
This is the second health official to be arrested in possession of stolen medicine.
A 65-year-old staff member from the Cecilia Makiwane Hospital was arrested in August and is currently out on bail.
