Between 1 000 and 2 000 people took part in a unique protest action along the Port Elizabeth beachfront on Saturday morning against a proposal to establish a fish farm in Algoa Bay.
It included a run, swim, walk and snorkel dive, which started at Hobie Beach and ended at Humewood Beach, where a memorandum was handed to the authorities.
This follows the announcement by the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries’ plan to bring commercial fish farming to the Bay in various locations.
Algoa Bay chairperson of the environmental group, WESSA, Gary Koekemoer says there are two messages they want to convey, one is that they are celebrating the Bay as a fantastic asset, and the other is that they don't think a fish farm is appropriate for Algoa Bay's conditions.
He said it would also create problems for Nelson Mandela Bay's tourism industry and would cost more jobs than it would create.
Koekemoer said a far better idea was to restore the Swartkops River instead.
