The PE Seabird Rehabilitation Centre at Cape Recife is currently caring for 79 African penguin chicks.
Their nests were destroyed in the two big cold fronts which hit Bird Island earlier this month.
SANCCOB centre Manager Margot Collett told AlgoaFM News that they have a staff member permanently monitoring the birdlife on Bird Island and that he was able to alert SANParks officials to the plight of the chicks.
They were then brought back to the SANCCOB centre where they will be looked after for the next two and a half months before being taken back to Bird Island.
Collett says they’re consuming a serious amount of fish and that SANCCOB is currently running an adopt a chick campaign to raise awareness and funds to help feed them.
The Centre is deemed an essential service and for more information visit their website www.sanccob.co.za
