Pedestrian killed in PE beachfront accident

A 31-year old Port Elizabeth man is in police custody, following a fatal accident in Beach Road on the city's beachfront early on Sunday morning.

Police spokesperson, Col Priscilla Naidu says it is alleged that the driver of an Audi A4 was driving in the right-hand lane towards Kings Beach, near the MacDonald’s intersection just before 4 am, when he allegedly hit two pedestrians standing next to the island on the road.

One of them died at the scene.

She says the driver then lost control of the vehicle and collided into four other stationary vehicles near the Humewood Hotel.

No-one was in these vehicles at the time.

Naidu says the driver got out of the car and ran away, but was later arrested by police.

The deceased has not yet been identified, and the second pedestrian, a 26-year old woman from Zwide, was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Naidu says the driver is being detained on charges of drunk driving, culpable homicide and reckless and/or negligent driving.

He will appear in the Port Elizabeth magistrates’ court on Monday.
