A 45-year-old motorist is in police custody following his arrest for culpable homicide and drunken driving.
Police spokesperson Captain Gerda Swart says the man allegedly left a club in Durban Street at about 8. 40 pm on Sunday when he hit a pedestrian.
She says as he was driving off, he was stopped by a witness who informed him that someone was being dragged underneath his vehicle.
Captain Swart says police and emergency workers were summoned to the scene where the pedestrian was declared dead.
The victim's identity is unknown.
Captain Swart says anybody who is missing a male family member in his forties is urged to contact the police.
