Police in Port Elizabeth have arrested two men who first robbed a petrol station in William Moffet Expressway, before kidnapping a teenager to use his car as a getaway vehicle.
Spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says the suspects, aged 26 and 28 entered the shop just after 10 pm on Sunday night and asked the cashier for a plastic bag.
One of the men then produced a firearm, which turned out to be a toy gun, before ordering the cashier to empty the tills.
An 18-year-old customer who was in the shop at the time was then held up and ordered to get into his Mercedes Benz to help them escape.
The teenager stalled his car in Circular Drive and managed to exit the vehicle and run away.
Naidu says by this time the cashier in the shop had already pressed the panic button and a private security company (Atlas) was quickly on the scene.
The getaway vehicle was spotted at the corner of Buffelsfontein and Victoria drive.
Both men were arrested and the money and toy gun confiscated.
The Mount Road Cluster Commander Major General Thembisile Patekile expressed his gratitude to the security company and garage employee for their alertness and speedy response.
The two men will be charged with armed robbery, kidnapping and carjacking.
