An 18-year-old learner from a school in Bethelsdorp, Port Elizabeth, has been arrested after a revolver was found inside his schoolbag.
Colonel Priscilla Naidu says police members responded to information about a Grade 11 learner who might have a firearm in his possession.
She says on arrival at the school at around noon on Monday, police officers were ushered to a classroom where they explained the nature of their visit to the learners.
Colonel Naidu says an 18-year-old then approached one of the officers to confess that a gun was in his bag.
Members found a .38 revolver with one round of ammunition in the school bag.
The firearm’s serial number had been filed off.
Colonel Naidu says the teenager was arrested for the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition and is expected to appear in court soon.
The Acting Mount Road Cluster Commander Brigadier Thandiswe Kupiso commended the members for their swift response.
He said violence in or near schools impacts negatively on the education of learners and that the protection of learners is of paramount importance to the police.
