A 37-year-old suspect will be appearing in the Motherwell magistrate’s court in Port Elizabeth on Tuesday on a charge of aggravated assault.
This follows an incident on Sunday when Swartkops police members noticed a vehicle driving recklessly and decided to stop it only to establish that the driver was being robbed by three men.
Colonel Priscilla Naidu says that at around 8.30 pm, the 43-year-old Jikeleza driver and his 33-year-old girlfriend picked up three men in their Toyota Corolla in Addo Road in Ikamvelihle.
As they were driving, one of the men pointed a firearm at the driver and ordered him to stop.
When the driver refused, he was stabbed multiple times in the left shoulder while his girlfriend also sustained a stab wound to the left shoulder.
During the ensuing scuffle, the driver started swerving across the road which caught the attention of Swartkops police members in the area.
They immediately approached the car and the suspects promptly got out of the car and started running.
Colonel Naidu says one of the suspects was arrested and a gas gun was found in the vehicle.
The driver and his girlfriend were both taken to hospital for treatment.
