PE taxi driver arrested for robbery, more victims urged to come forward

Detectives in Algoa park in Port Elizabeth are looking for victims who might have been robbed by a certain taxi driver.

Spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg says this taxi driver allegedly picks up people and then, while driving, diverts from his route in order to rob his passengers

A 28-year-old woman claims to have been robbed of her cellphone in January this year when she boarded the taxi from Cleary Park to go to Kenako Mall.

Janse van Rensburg says according to the complainant when they approached the Old Bethelsdorp intersection, the driver informed her that there was a roadblock ahead and that he needed to make a diversion.

He then stopped on a nearby gravel road, threatened her with an iron bar, before taking her cell phone.

The driver then forced her out of his vehicle and drove off.

Police have since arrested a 39-year-old suspect at his house in Kwazakhele and detained him on a charge of robbery.

He appeared in court on Monday and will remain in custody until his next appearance on the 8th of April.

Police suspect that there may be more victims who may have been robbed under these similar circumstances and they are appealing to these people to come forward with information.

The officer investigating the matter is Detective Colonel Paul Oranje 082 779 7247
