A 37-year-old Port Elizabeth taxi driver has been arrested after allegedly raping a 23-year-old woman, who was the last passenger left travelling with him in Newton Brighton, late on Thursday.
The young woman reported the incident to a Nelson Mandela Bay traffic officer soon after they were stopped for reckless driving in John Tallant Drive, in Deal Party, before midnight.
Police spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg, said as the officer approached the minibus taxi, the woman jumped out and informed him that she had been raped.
It is believed that she boarded the taxi in New Brighton and when there were no other passengers in the vehicle, he drove to the New Brighton Beach where the incident occurred.
Jansen Van Rensburg said the officer also stopped a Mount Road police vehicle that happened to be in the area where the officers were informed of the alleged rape.
The driver was arrested on a charge of rape and he is expected to appear in court on Monday.
Janse van Rensburg said more charges could be added.
