PE statue vandalised as guards are placed around Oom Paul

Port Elizabeth police have released the man who was arrested in connection with the vandalism of the horse statue in Cape Road on Monday.

The Herald reports that his release was confirmed by Humewood station commander, Brigadier Ronald Koll.

He told the newspaper that the man was released, after witnesses who saw the incident, “refused to give statements implicating the man after his arrest”.

Koll added that he was still a suspect in the case, however due to witnesses failing to give statements, the man was released.

Earlier on Monday, a group of men suspected to be members of the EFF, dismantled the Horse Memorial where Cape Road meets Russell Road.

Police were quick to respond, but only arrived at the scene after the statue, erected in memory of animals that died during the Boer War, was damaged.

Meanwhile, the Tshwane Metro has placed police guards around the statue of Paul Kruger in Pretoria’s Church Square and made plans to clean it, after it was targeted by vandals who covered two bronze sentries in green paint.

Mayoral spokesperson, Blessing Manale says work will start on Tuesday.

He says some 10 police officers are standing guard around the statue of the Transvaal republic president, after the sentries were smeared in paint as passers-by captured video footage late on Sunday.

The raised figure of Kruger, which was moved to the square in 1954 and unveiled by then Prime Minister DF Malan, escaped largely unscathed.
