PE schoolboy loses leg after bus crash

A Port Elizabeth schoolboy who was injured in Monday's bus accident has had a leg amputated.

Three other children who were seriously injured remain in hospital in a stable condition.

Police spokesperson, warrant officer Alwin Labans, says the rest of the children were treated and discharged from hospital.

The bus driver is expected to appear in court on Wednesday on a charge of reckless and negligent driving.

He was arrested after he apparently lost control and crashed in Beetlestone Road on Monday afternoon.

A thanksgiving service was held at the Malabar Primary School.

Principal Crispin Abrahams says the school wants to thank all the people who assisted the injured school children at the scene of the accident and at hospital.

He says counseling is also being provided at the school.

Meanwhile, Algoa Bus company CEO, Sicelo Duze, described the accident as a tragedy and the first such incident in more than 20 years.

He declined to be drawn on the details of how the accident occurred as this is now subject of the police investigation.

Duze says the bus was impounded and tested but no mechanical faults were found.

He also disputed reports that the bus had been overloaded.

"The bus was not overloaded. That bus takes 59 seated and 38 standing and also children that are 12 and under, for every three children there are two adults. So, that was not overload (sic). We are not that irresponsible," he said.

Duze also disputed a report that the driver operated the bus in his private capacity.

"The fact that the bus driver has his own bus as an operator that is not accurate, that's not true. He works for Algoa Bus Company and he has been with us from 2007. He worked for the company that long."
