A Port Elizabeth man has been arrested on a charge of drunken driving following an accident in which several school children were injured on Thursday morning.
Traffic Department Acting Superintendent, Eric Piso, said the driver lost control of the bakkie, with 11 learners inside, while turning into Baakens Street and crashed into a tree outside the City Hall.
Piso says the 37-year-old was transporting school children to Ed-U-College Primary and High School in Govan Mbeki Avenue.
Five primary school kids were treated for minor injuries.
Metro police also discovered that the vehicle was unroadworthy.
He is also facing a charge of reckless/Negligent Driving.
