Port Elizabeth police have recovered two of the four VW cars that were stolen during an armed robbery at a depot in Kabega Park, Port Elizabeth, on Friday night.
Two other vehicles are still missing while another vehicle, a VW Caddy, was found on the premises after being abandoned by the suspects because it did not have any petrol in the tank.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said police were acting on a tip-off received on Monday when they found the two VW Polos in a garage at a house in Nconco Street in Kwazakhele, Port Elizabeth.
She said police confirmed that they were the same vehicles taken in the armed robbery, while two other Polos have yet to be recovered.
"Police are following up on leads and expect to make a breakthrough in arrests soon," Naidu said.
Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Liziwe Ntshinga expressed her appreciation to the media and the Provincial Organised Crime Investigation Unit for the recovery of two cars.
'We commend the community for their efforts in working with the police and encourage them to continue to do so. Through their commitment towards a safe and secure environment, the vehicles were recovered so soon,' added Gen Ntshinga.
Meanwhile, police are also investigating two cases in which two VW cars stolen last week in Kwanobuhle and Kamesh in Uitenhage last week which were then set alight in Matanzima Street in Kwanobuhle.
This, amid rumours on social media that criminals were targetting VW vehicles to set them alight in solidarity with a known car hijacker, Thando Mlilwana, who was gunned down outside a tavern earlier this month.
Police could not confirm the rumours but said investigations were continuing.
