Nelson Mandela Bay’s northern beaches are more at risk of shark attacks.
That's according to the preliminary results of research conducted into Great White sharks off the coast of the metro.
A report to the Sport, Recreation, Arts and Cultural Services Committee that meets next week, says a three-year agreement to conduct the research was signed with the Bayworld Centre for Research and Education in 2009/10.
With a budget of R800-thousand, supplemented by funding from other sources, the first phase of the project involved an investigation into the numbers and distribution of Great Whites within the Bird Island Marine Protected Areas, and aerial sightings of sharks off Nelson Mandela Bay beaches.
